A type of arthritis that is very painful and is characterized by inflamed and deformed joints is called gout.
Gout happens when the uric acid levels in the body soar to high levels because of insufficient elimination of uric acid through urine.
This uric acid leads to formation of lumps of small crystals in the joint linings. Often, people try out home remedies for gout attacks as the first line of treatment.
The human body releases certain chemicals when the uric acid crystals are surrounded by white blood cells. These chemicals cause the inflammation in the joints. These crystals are also referred to as monosodium urate.
Who Gets Gout?
For men, uric acid levels increase in the body from puberty itself. Normally men above the age of 40 are impacted by gout pain. The person may also experience other health problems like decreased kidney function, kidney stones and deposits of uric acid in the skin.
For women, uric acid levels increase during menopause and therefore they may experience gout during or after menopause.
Types Of Gout Arthritis
When gout happens as an individual disorder it is called as primary gout. Sometimes gout can happen as a result of taking certain medicines or due to some other medical conditions. This type is called as secondary gout.
Causes Of Gout Attacks
Some of the causes for primary gout are obesity, heredity, excessive alcohol consumption, consumption of read meat and oily fish, dehydration, starvation, some surgeries, chemotherapy treatment and others.
Secondary gout can be caused due to medicines like allopurinol, aspirin, nicotinic acid, probene acid, diuretic and hypertension medicines.
Symptoms Of Gout Arthritis
Some of the common symptoms of gout are pain, swelling, warmth and extreme tenderness at the affected joint. The skin around the affected joint may become red or purple in color. The movement of the affected joint becomes very limited. As the gout condition improves the patient may see peeling of skin around the affected joint.
Gout Treatment Options
The normal first line of conventional treatment for gout attacks is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
If the patient suffers from kidney or heart disease then he or she cannot be given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
For such patients a drug called colchicine is recommended by doctors. However this drug has gastrointestinal side effects and therefore avoided by many patients.
Another popular conventional treatment recommended for gout is corticosteroids. This drug is considered effective for multiple joint gout attacks.
Other than conventional treatment options there are homeopathic, herbal and natural home remedies for gout attacks.
In this article we will be discussing some of the effective home treatments for gout arthritis.
Apple Cider Vinegar
The acid present in apple cider vinegar helps in relieving gout pain. A mix of honey and apple cider vinegar helps to further boost the body’s anti-inflammatory response.

Cherries As Home Remedies For Gout Attacks
One of the best gout home treatments is cherries. They contain vitamin C and antioxidants that are beneficial. You can eat them as a fruit or consume cherry juice.
Both, fresh cherry juice and canned cheery juices have been found to be effective in reducing inflammation and preventing gout attacks.
Consuming too much of cherries is also not recommended as it can lead to digestive disorders like constipation and diarrhea.
Eat no more than 12 to 15 cherries a day. And drink no more than 6 oz of cherry juice twice a day.
Baking soda or bicarbonate soda is considered to beneficial to treat gout at home. Consuming baking soda helps to make the blood and the body more alkaline.
A more alkaline blood is able to hold more uric acid without it getting crystalized in the joints. This also means more uric acid is thrown out of the body along with the urine.
Mix half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Drink this water 4 times in a day for two weeks.
However, baking soda contains sodium and therefore those suffering from high blood pressure should avoid it or they should cut down consumption of salt when they take baking soda.
